Black Panther star Winston Duke has been picked to play Kimbo Slice in an upcoming biopic about the backyard brawler who rose to mixed martial arts fame in South Florida.
Deadline was first to report the news of Duke landing the leading role in the project titled “Backyard Legend” after breaking out as M’Baku in Marvel’s “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”
Kimbo Slice, birth name Kevin Ferguson, became a viral sensation in the early 2000s when his street-fighting clips were posted on YouTube. He was a strip club bouncer and bodyguard before his MMA career began to take off.
Born in the Bahamas and raised in the Miami area, Slice lived in Coral Springs at the time of his death at age 42 in 2016. He was found to have congestive heart failure and a liver mass and had been awaiting a heart transplant.
Steve Lee Jones, who is producing “Backyard Legend,” told Deadline that Duke is the perfect fit to play Slice in the film.
“It’s a rich and layered tale about this man’s incredible journey from a poor neighborhood in Miami to becoming a worldwide phenomenon,” Jones said. “We are ecstatic that Winston has decided to take on this both physically and emotionally challenging role. We simply could not find a better Kimbo!”
